TL DR: I want to read sci-fi that doesn't take place somewhere that looks like a hospital/company hq/government agency hq, I want it to be cozy. Some examples of this "uncoziness": this and this. I love The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy but even in that series the chapters featuring the Heart of Gold make me feel strangely uncomfortable. I want to read something like The Shining (SK), The Castle (Kafka), or The Hobbit (Tolkien) which make me want to wrap myself in a blanket and get into the fetal position and just enjoy my comfort (admittedly these examples are pretty disparate and just off the top of my head, but they are at least not as uncozy as sci-fi I've seen). Spaceships are all white glass-like modernist things that give me a feeling like the one you get when in an air-conditioned hospital waiting room you sit on a cold iron chair and all of a sudden you are very grateful for how comfortable the sofa in your living room is. I am interested in science fiction but cannot get into it for the simple fact that everything is so uncozy.
